Outstanding software that talks to each other and compliments the tasks when in each program. It is my primary software for cataloging over 8,000 photos and making numerous Video/Photo DVDs.

I installed the software two weeks ago and so far no major issues. I have over 10,000 digitial images (my family switched to digitial cameras in 2000 and many of the new photos have been taken with a Nikon D90 camera) and we have a HD video recorder from Canon and I’ve tested several of the photo and video editing features. The organizer import feature skipped over all of the HD video clips with . M2TS extension, but I can import and edit the videos, they just don’t show in the organizer (at least for now).

I am using a Hewlett-Packard computer purchased early Nov 2009 with Windows 7 64bit, an Intel Core i5 processor (quad core), ATI Radeon HD 4350 graphics card, Realtek HD Audio, and 8GB of RAM. I am not a previous user of Adobe photo and video software, but I am pleased enough that I am getting a second set of the software for my daughter. My one complaint so far is that the software does not include context sensitive help feature that will link you to help specific topics of interest for a given menu. So being new to the software, I am spending more time then I would like searching the help files. I’ve noticed that the software identifies the processor when it starts potentially indicating that there may be some adjustments being made to how some of the background processing occurs based on the hardware. My review is primarily about Photoshop Elements (not Premiere Elements). I usually get the bundle because I always think I’m going to start editing videos but I never do.

I’ve used Photoshop Elements since version 2. Each upgrade adds some new features–but the question for me is always is it worth the money for each additional upgrade? I’ve found over the years that I could skip every other upgrade and it would be fine . . . except, I teach digital photography classes so I always need the most current version.

Looking at the chart provided in the Product Description lets you see the new features. I was only interested in the new editing features which I have outlined below.

    1. “Recompose your photos to any size without distorting key subjects. ” Looks neat, but I’m not sure I’ll use it much. I could easily live without this feature and save my money.

    2. “Create perfectly lit shots with Photomerge technology. ” I like this one, but keep in mind that you basically have to have two exposures of the exact same scene (use a tripod) for this to work well.

    3. “Preview a range of adjustments before choosing the best one. ” I’m not sure exactly what this means. Perhaps there is a special window that comes up, but I haven’t found it yet.

Bottomline: If I didn’t need to stay current I would stay with Elements 7 and upgrade when Element 9 comes out.

Update added Feb. 11, 2010. There is a glitch with this program when using a Wacom tablet. The pressure sensitivity often does not work when using the brush tool. If you run an internet search you will see that this is happening to others as well. I’ve tried numerous things to fix it but it still doesn’t work. So, I went back to using Elements 7. (P. S. The same thing is happening with my computer and CS4–so I had to go back to using CS3 as well! Extremely disappointed!)

I changed my 5 star rating to 3 stars.

I tried to use this software with my Asus Eee Netbook (2 GB RAM, Intel Atom 280, 10 inch screen, Windows XP), but the performance was just too sluggish.
Compared to the photo editing software I usually use on this little machine, Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2, opening pictures and editing them crawled at a snail’s pace. If you want to use Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 as your primary picture editor, install it at a more powerful rig.
I tried it then at my wife’s Windows 7 laptop (3 GB RAM, 2. 0GHz AMD Athlon II Dual-Core M300 Processor, 15 inch screen) and it performed satisfactory.

Probably the best feature of Elements 8 are the numerous automatic editing tools, which will achieve very good results in most cases.
If you want to take matters in your own hands, the tools are all there, but they are not prominently featured and not intuitively to operate. With some learning by doing, you might achieve good results quickly eventually – alas, who has time to deal with that? But then again, with the automatic tools generating such good results, it’s probably all you need for the occasional quick fix. And if you really want to dive deep into serious photo editing, you are better off with the fully fledged Photoshop anyway (which I have installed on my desktop PC).

The video editing part of this package, Premiere Elements 8, works well, too. Nothing special, as other products on the market have comparable (or better) features. It is nice, though, that you have the same look-and-feel for both photo and video editing, which makes the learning curve for the other one much shallower, if you already know to handle one of it.

All in all, this is a very nice package that will give most point-and-shooters all the tools they need for the occasional editing job. Just don’t try to use it on your netbook, if you are not blessed with some serious patience.
