If you have Aperture 2 and use the Aperture 3 Trial – there is a known bug which causes a crash. I experienced the bug but decided to move forward. It is worth it. The upgrade was smooth and I have no crash problems at all. Aperture 3 finally brings the great features of iPhoto and adds some new pro features. I’ve spent the entire weekend playing with it and I love it. Runs great on 64bit. Faces and Places are awesome. I highly recommend this upgrade.

This was a great update! I’ve used aperture since 1. 5 and its had a lot of little quarks. This version is very stable. I’m not sure why so many others are having such issues with crashes but I’d be willing to bet it has something to do with plug-ins or lack or memory. I’m running it on a 2008 Mac Pro with 10G of memory. I converted my 500G library from 2. 0 to 3. 0 without any issues either.

First let me say I am an semi-amateur photographer who reinvests all my profits in better technology. My library contains about 50,000 images or so, going on my 3rd TB of storage space. . Run a Macbook Pro dual core, with 4G ram. Don’t think I am better than anybody or anything, just want to give my perceptions of this product.

Stopped by the local Apple Store today to pick up an upgrade. Surprisingly, it was sold out. Didn’t realize that many people in my area were using the product. Personally I run it just because. . . . . . . but actually use Lightroom and PSE much more. Had major issues with some of the features or lack thereof in A2. Like Zoom. The Loupe tool on A2 was a sorry cop out for any real meaning to effective zoom capability. Even more so if you need to edit or brush in Zoom. Thus, I ended up with Photoshop Elements and a Wacom Intuos4 Pen tablet. Was really desiring a strong showing from the Aperture3 upgrade. As it has so much capability and I so appreciate the quality and dependability of Apple product in general. Also had some issues with printer drivers using Epson printers in my lab. Lightroom is, so far the only program that prints acurately on my Epson printers

Did get a chance to play with A3 on a nice Mac desktop with a big ole’ screen at the store. After messing with it for about 15 minutes with the image files that were supplied with the program and being thoroughly impressed by the program, I was disappointed when I asked the Apple rep for A3 upgrade disc. He said they received a decent sized supply but they were sold out of the upgrades. I understand why. Let me say, Aperture 2 was not my favorite program for photo processing and editing. it runs 3rd or 4th out of 5 different programs that I use. Have had A2 since it came out but Adobe blew it out the door shortly after that with the release of Lightroom2 and PSE6 and now PSE8.

All I can really say is, that for $99 for the upgrade and with the experience I had playing with it at the Apple Store, it only took a few minutes to know that this is a serious upgrade to the Aperture Platform. If I did not have Aperture previously, then $199 would still be a good value for the whole program. Have read about issues with the program crashing. Apple will fix those pretty quickly. So it will probably not deter me from getting the upgrade as soon as I can. If any issues arise after installation and use, I will come back here and give an update.

Am eagerly awaiting unleashing the power of the Wacom Pen tablet on th A3 program. . . . . . . .

Finally picked up an upgrade disc. Quite a lengthy experience installing it, ok. But finally got it to work. Library rather large, took a few days to process everything. I left my Mac on for several hours, and once overnght. What folks are saying is true, the product seems to be a Beta version of Aperture 3. This product is “Not ready for Primetime” It is not working correctly at this juncture. I am having fun checking it out and playing with it whenever possible. Cant wait til Apple releases fixes.

One thing I can say, that if you have a lot of pics go into preferences and turn off Face recognition. Or just start from scratch with brand new Library and re-import photos as needed. Wait for the software updates before turning Faces back on. Me, I have way to many pics of different people. This would simplify things , but create a huge database exercize for me.

In short, definately still worth the money to upgrade. but only in a few rare cases could one expect to be able to become reliant on A3 for extensive workflow photo editing at this date.

PRO”S~ The new brush sets look really cool . What i have been able to use has been impressive. However they are buggy at this time.

Also the presets. Like Lightroom, really efficient feature to stylize images. Also a little buggy

    Simplified Adjustmens pane

Metadata pane includes Camera shooting data icons. and focus points option, nice!

Zoom featue (which is why i did not use A2) is as good as it gets, one of the best ive seen. Very buggy though.

I also checked the print settings and it allows me to let the Printer manage the Color Profile. Which I prefer in many cases.

    C’mon Apple lets get it going. . . . . . .

Con’s~It just doesnt work well, but they will fix that soon. Very buggy. maybe it needs updates, maybe the hardware needs to be worn it. As i use it more and more it is loosening up.

Also, hope they can upgrade the program to work better with the Wacon Intuos4 pen tablet.

As i play around with it a lot of new things are starting to pop out, new versions of old features, Im starting to like it more and more.

    So for me. . . . . Serenity now. . . . . . . . . . .

This product is so buggy (i. e. , it either crashes or operates so slowly that you think it has crashed) that it’s basically unusable. And I’m running the new 17″ iMac with a quad-core i7 processor (and 8gb of RAM). Basically one of the fastest macs that money can buy. Very disappointing that they would release such garbage.

Btw, at this point, until they fix the bugs, DO NOT TURN ON “FACES. ” Once you do, the program goes from incredibly to slow to inoperable.

I’ll try to update my review once they push an update. If the program actually worked, I think my review would be very positive.

Im a professional photographer specialized in live performances photography. I’ve been wating for Aperture 3 for a long time and Im happy it is out by now. After using it for the convertion of about 400 pictures of a concert I can say that the program does a very good job in this aspect, but I could detect some bug regarding the HOT PIXELS automatic removal, because one day I opened some pics and could see 2 big green hot pixels in them (my camera has about 6 hot pixels, but only these green where shown. ), but the next day when I opened the same pics, the green hot pixels were not there anymore. . . and have not seen them again.

For me, the possibility of editing your photos in FULL SCREEN mode is something really useful, and just for this, the program is worth.

Aperture 3 is a good program, it is a good and powerful raw converter and Im sure Apple will solve the issues that have been detected, pretty soon.
