Let me start off by saying the product performed as expected for the haters out there. My problem was more with the pricing due to the fact that under a month after purchasing the bitdefender internet security for $32. 00, I found it on Amazaon for half the price I originally paid for it. Amazon credited me the difference and I was happily on my way.

Bitdefender Internet Suite is a waste of money. Some of their claims are misleading to the extreme:

    # Shop, bank, listen, watch privately and securely; blocks attempted identity theft (phishing)

Bitdefender WILL NOT protect you from fishing attacks. To do that it would have to accurately identify all phishing e-mails. No program can do this 100% reliably. It is up to you to use common sense when reading e-mails and look at who they are from to determine if an e-mail is a phishing attack or not. Believing that ANY program gives you complete security lulls one into a false sense of security. Only personal vigilance and avoiding EVER responding to e-mails that ask for banking or other passwords can protect you 100% of the time.

    # Prevents personal information from leaking via e-mail, web or instant messaging

The statement is a complete failure of communication and is virtually meaningless. Things don’t just ‘leak’ out instant messenger or e-mail. You have to proactively type information into these programs and willingly send it elsewhere. There are certain viruses like key-stroke-loggers that can and will mine your passwords, but they don’t have a single thing to do with e-mail or messenger programs. For a program to prevent personal information from getting sent out via e-mail or messenger, it would have to effectively cut off 100% of outbound traffic from your computer. This claim is dubious and misleading, and again can create a false sense of security.

Additionally, Bitdefender ranks low on professional review sites as a virus scanner / blocker. You’re much better off with MICROSOFT SECURITY SUITE which is also FREE if you have a licensed copy of Windows. It scores higher in every category, and additionally costs nothing.

The bottom line is that all virus scanners are fallible. The only way to truly protect your computer is by being smart: don’t download programs you don’t know much about; don’t go to web pages that are known whorehouses for viruses (like wallpaper sites), don’t e-mail out your passwords EVER. Additionally invest in a good hardware firewall (most routers these days have one built in) and keep your virus definitions up to date for the program you do have. Get a good free Anti-spyware program (superantispyware is my personal favorite, but LavaSoft’s Ad-Aware is also very good and also free) and run the program once a week.

Buying Norton, McAfee or Bitdefender is a waste of money. The free programs referenced above are as good or better than those you pay money for. Links to each are in the comments of this review.

I had McAfee until its renewal was due, it always slowed my computer when it ran so I decided to give something else a try Bitdefender was one of those attempts and unfortunately at this point I’m not sure which did what to my computer. Suffice to say all the programs I went online to seek out reviews. I believe that some companies write their own evaluations and are presented as unbiased opinions. Bitdefender appeared to be a copy of another program the name of which escapes me but along with AV Antivirus Elite two programs which ran fine with McAfee no longer could download their updates or allow a fax program to work. I wound up with Norton Internet Secuity 2010, after reloading both previously mentioned programs that had problems both work fine and Norton doesn’t slow the computer. Who know how well it does its job it at least allows my other programs to function. Good luck on what you choose I think it’s a crapshoot based on what I have read with all these antivirus programs.

I have always used Bitdefender Internet Security on my 2 pcs. Always worked great until the 2010 upgrade. My newer pc – Intel Dual Core 2. 0 with XP Pro, has problems with the 2010 version. At least once a day, Bitdefender crashes and I get a message “Bitdefender Services not Responding”. Bitdefender has not been able to fix the problem or even figure out what causes it. The only way to fix the it is to reboot. My older laptop – also running XP Pro – has no problems.

I have given up on Bitdefender and am changing to AVG.
