CA is a big-enterprise software company that’s also tried to reach out to consumers in the security space, and this is their latest attempt. Some of the earlier products were of questionable quality, as CA had a history of acquiring smaller companies and then trying to glue the components together, and in the past, this tended to result in awkward and poorly integrated software.

CA’s ISS includes all the common security functions a typical PC user requires, including anti-virus, spam and phishing protection, backup and so on. One somewhat unusual feature is computer migration, helping you get your programs, data files and so forth moved to an alternative PC. The product also comes with an introductory version of Mozy online backup with 2GB of backup space free.

Now that CA’s had these products for a while, they’ve finally been able to redesign all the key parts, especially the user interface – and my understanding is that CA reached out to Frog Design, perhaps the world’s leading design firm. As a result, this is easily the best and most consumer-friendly version CA ever shipped, to the extent that its completely viable alternative to the big name Symantec or McAffee products.

I can’t really attest to whether it’s any more secure than the competition, but since CA also sells tons of software to the biggest organizations on the planet, I’d like to think that if the product shares features with the stuff the big guys run, it must be pretty solid.

I found the products to install easily and painlessly on my three PCs: one Windows 7 64-bit, one Vista and one Windows XP (the product includes three licenses, so you can simply install the same software three times). Once installed, the products worked as I expect them to, more or less as though it’s not even there. I also use Symantec and McAffee, and I found that boot time and signature updates seemed to be slightly faster with the CA product. More importantly, my Windows XP system (admittedly somewhat slow at 1. 6 GHz), tends to bog down with the others, but not with the CA product.

I won’t comment on the pricing and distribution policies as another review covered it. There seem to be many resellers of the CA product, and it pays to shop around. As others pointed out, Amazon’s price seems to be one of the best.

    Recommended.

In computer terms, this is garbage! Don’t buy this, you will regret it. The personal firewall is beyond bad, it will slow down your internet connection and sometimes completely block it. Changing settings is another nightmare as the program will often freeze, when it doesn’t there’s about a minute delay before the program will change tabs or recognize your clicks. The anti virus is ok, this is the best compliment i can give it. Stay away folks.

I can now see why this is priced so low – it’s a piece of garbage. I bought this last week for my laptop (running Windows XP) and for a new desktop (running Windows 7) because of several recommendations made by the techs and sales personnel at Compusa. It installed fine, and that’s when the problems started. It blocked me from the internet completely. After just over an hour to the CA support office, the tech was able to remote in and get me access to the internet. Even then it kept blocking access to MSN’s Hotmail. Finally, it appeared fixed. Then when we tried to type messages in Hotamil, the screen would not immediately display the characters (letters and numbers). Back to tech suuport for another wonderful hour, and then the problem was only partially resolved. Using another computer I emailed CA about my issues, with no response. I give this product one star, only because there is nothing lower.

I spent almost an hour chatting with their tech support and he couldn’t solve the problem. It wouldn’t not allow Microsoft Media Player to download the latest TV Guide or update the latest TV setup.

I followed step by step direction which I received from their tech support but it didn’t help, finally he gave me a web address but that also didn’t help. I hope I am the only unlucky one and no one else had the same experience.

Personally, I’ll never buy this software again.

This is a good program to keep your kids away from bad internet sites but it has a mind of its own.

I found that many legitimate programs stopped getting updates from their download centers. I tried every thing possible, from giving these programs unnecessary complete access to the internet, disabling firewall, antivirus but nothing worked.

Finally, I give-up and uninstalled it from my computer. Ever since things are back to normal. All my programs work as they supposed to and I am very happy with the Microsoft solutions.

I wish didn’t have to waste my money on this poorly written software.
