This product more than likely works fine for taxes, which is why I give it 2 stars rather than 1. But this is the second year in a row they sent me something that is NOT what’s advertised on the page! Look at the chart that compares the AT HOME versions: Basic, Deluxe, and Premium. Then look down the Deluxe column (this version) to where it says “One state program downloaded included” – it’s checked, right? Which means a state program download should be included, right? WRONG! The product packaging has the same chart, almost, the state program download is – surprisingly enough – NOT checked! Last year they advertised compatibility with my OS, then made me upgrade to an incompatible product. Is H&R block physically incapable of advertising the the product they actually provide? BOOx2!

Amaazon says it’s H&R Block At Home 2009 Deluxe Federal + State + eFile [Formerly TaxCut] but I got H&R DeductionPRO and it does not import taxes from last year!

The program is about the same as Turbo Tax and has many of the same issues. Don’t think you are saving time by importing imvestment trades from Quicken. Both H&R Blocks and Turbo Tax mess this up by importing every single transaction (which for a mutual fund held for many years can be very many) when your broker only provides a summary of the basis. I had to spend 15 minutes deleting the extra trade information. I find it quicker to type everything in than confirm that every small transaction came accross cleanly.
Now for my big complaint. I have purchased H&R Blocks program and have spent one complete evening entering all the prelim data, salary, interest and dividends. This year I purchased some Master Limited Partnerships (MLP’s) on the stock market and I get the K-1’s from the companies. When I get to the guided question section after the dividends, I find that the H&R Blocks program can’t handle these Publicly Traded Partnerships. The product information on the packaging nor the H&R Block web site ever mention this limitation. This is a BIG problem. This affects a lot of investors because one of my MLP stocks trades over 1 million shares/day.
Now I have to go and buy a copy of TurboTax. I really hate that since I am already forced to buy Quicken because it is the only game in town. It keeps the record accurately but it gets really confused with calculating returns when your have made multiple purchases and some sells.

I have used Tax Cut for years but this version has a lot of bugs. I could never get the CD to install. The person at the Customer Service desk was helpful and we did finally get the software to load. Now I can’t read everything on the screen. It is extremely wide. I did not change my screen resolution so I am not sure what happened. The help section appears to be great for actually preparing the returns but I have not been able to get that far since I can’t read everything on the page.

I have been using H&R Block Tax Cut/At Home for several years. Its interview process is straight forward. One drawback is that for limited partnership (K1) reporting, it does not do everything automatically. There are still a few things that have to be entered manually, in addition to the K1.
