As others have stated, software is glitchy and buggy. Worst of all, tech support is non existent. Currently, I am stuck not being able to download my State software. H&R Block @ Home tells me I need admin privilege to install it even though I am the only admin on the computer! I have used Tax Cut past three years with this same OS(XP)and never had this problem until now. I tried using the chat support, which is laggy, disconnects randomly, and randomly wipes out what you are typing. Unacceptable! When I finally communicated the problem to the tech, he just Googled for an answer! It took him 10-15 minutes to do that, then copied and pasted a fix for the 64 bit Vista OS. I’m running 32 bit XP! He didn’t have a clue. Now, with 9 days until Tax day he says Tier 2 support will contact me in 5-6 days to look at my problem. 5-6 DAYS! Yes, folks, don’t buy this buggy software from a company that doesn’t know what customer service is.

I purchased the download version because I thought it would be easy and save time and money. After getting the Amazon downloader installed, the product download stalled at 79% and after about 20 minutes, I canceled and restarted it. This one completed successfully. Next the installer had an error that said “Cannot connect to the database”. After moving the installer to the desktop and retrying 3 times, (including allowing Windows 7 to automatically try to re-install), I finally got the program installed. Next came the federal update download which also stalled at about 80%. While I sat waiting (again), I figured I’d write a review on Amazon. Once I actually get to do my taxes, I’ll try to update this review with an actual product review. For those who waited until April to buy the software and do taxes – good luck getting it downloaded and installed.

I bought this software in the hopes that I would be able to easily do my taxes this year and then have the convenience of e-filing at the end of it all. I also hoped that since it was H&R Block, they would be able to ensure that my returns were correct. Well after 4 hours of filling out all the information required by this incredibly poorly written software I was finally ready to submit, I was frustrated that it wasn’t quite as easy as I had hoped but relieved that everything seemed to be transmitted successfully.

I was shocked and disgusted when 2 days later I receive an email saying that both of my returns had been rejected. That’s odd, I thought, surely it must be an easy error to fix. I opened up the email and was instructed to open up the program for further details on why my returns were rejected. Irritating they couldn’t just tell me but fine, whatever. I open up the program and am presented with an obscure message saying there *might* be a negative number where there is supposed to be a positive number but they can’t tell me where it is. Why in this day and age they can’t tell me exactly where the error is I have no idea. So I go through all 55 pages of my return scouring each line for a negative number. . . and alas I come up with nothing. So I go back through answering all of the questions again, and changing a few things I thought might be wrong and try resubmitting. REJECTED. . . . again. . . same obscure message. Fantastic.

I do some searches online and find others have had this problem too. Then I find out that the IRS publishes a list of websites that do essentially the same thing as this software, but for free. So I sign up for one of these sites, fill out my returns in a matter of 15 minutes, and have them e-filed. 24 hours later I get an email saying my returns were accepted.

Why can a website with irritating commercials get my returns accepted, but H&R block cannot? I do not recommend this software to anyone, please don’t throw your hard earned money away on it.

I have used taxcut for some years now and like it a lot – but note to Mac users – while a Mac version is available, this is NOT it, nor can I find it on Amazon. If there is any way to change to the Mac version, please let me know! In the meantime I will use VMWare to run it (sigh).

For years I did my taxes completely by hand. I’m very knowledgable about income tax, and can pretty much always prepare them so inclusively that I get the least possible tax for myself or friends that I advise.

However, I finally got tired of each little change causing me to have to manually recalculate and changed my penciled in totals on the forms. This program saves me hours each year.

You still need to know the details about your tax environment. Don’t expect this program to lead you by the nose and magically find every deduction and advantageous filing technique.

However, this year I had a nice surprise. I wasn’t well informed, evidently, about which taxes of my wife’s were eligible for refund as a result of her income level versus her social security income. If I hadn’t been using this program, I would have missed fully half of our refund, to the tune of about $2500.

    Use this software.
