I bought my first p/c in 1994 with windows 3. 1, I’ve gone through all the lock-ups & software glitches in the last 15 years, I even built computers for a living for a year back in 2001. I find this software very confusing & I feel that I need to take a course just to learn how to use it, their are user friendly programs out there that are simpler to use, maybe it’s just me but I’ve been around the block a few times & for me this was a waste of money.

I quit using Mac Final Cut Pro products, sicne Apple likes to sell you add on after add on. Sony Vegas was my choice for a replacement,a s I had read nothing but glowing reviews. of course, I shoot HD and so do alot of other pros. I was under the impression that this product was just what I needed. After all, Apple products didn’t have the right codec to capture footage from my Canon XH a1 camera. I downloaded the trial version, and walah! It worked like a charm. Nirvana I thought! That is until I tried to render a final product for output to DVD, tape, web, heck, I’d even settle for a render to my hard drive. Well, I guess my honeymoon has just ended. And after going to the SONY site–not an Amazon page of glowing reviews, ah the truth! SONY VEGAS 9 PALTINUM has a major flaw: if you have HD footage, rendering a final project is hit or miss! Hit or miss? After capturing 19 hours of footage, and spending a week traveling the edit learning curve of the software, I can’t get a final project? What!? Are you kidding me? After sacking my Mac G5 dual core, and upgrading to a Quad Core 8GB beast, especially made for video editing and gaming? Yes sir kiddos, unlike the happy go lucky folks writing the glowing reviews on this page, I go the real deal. You might want to go to the Sony site before your purchase, and don’t make the mistake I did-buying after “user reviews” on this Amazon review page. I assume Sony execs troll these pages and drop in these wildly enthusiastic reviews. Maybe they need to spend more time making sure their products work. Anyway, last night. 12 hours of editing. . Up until 5am working on edit, then discovered some wonderful software issues which brought the proceedings to a halt: I COULDN’T RENDER THE PROJECT. So, If I want people to see my masterpiece, I guess I’ll have to invite all of them over to watch it on my computer screen because it ain’t going anywhere!! Isn’t it nice to buy two new computers only to find that the freaking software is the issue? Sometimes having the best equipment is trumped by idiot software companies who make incompetent products!Yeah, its pretty telling when their support forums are 100 deep with people complaining about the same thing, and the only people on the forum are people with the same issue. Of course there’s always a “fix coming”. And, there are always recommended codecs and fixes, but I didn’t spend all this money on software to be told to go to a third party fix. Pathetic ain’t the word buddy! What a mess!

I own 8. 0 and well 9. 0 has some cool new updates, but it saves the files in the weirdest places. I looked for a video i was working on for over an hour and still couldn’t find it even using search.

First off, let me say I’m editing this review for the third and last time. The reason for this is that I keep trying to work with the program and as such, I’m learning more and more, especially from professional and other forums.

For the record, I started with a trial version of Vegas 8, which I liked and probably would have bought. However, I had to leave town and my desktop for awhile and during this time my trial version expired. I had to go back to Sony and download the software again. Version 8 was no longer available so I downloaded Sony Vegas Platinum Version 9a. This is a review for Vegas 9a.

(Btw, if you have doubts about the veracity of this one star review, check out the forums at [. . . ], specifically [. . . ] regarding poor performance and hanging. )

    My thoughts:

    1. If you don’t have at least 2 Gig of RAM, a Duo or better Core computer and 2 gHz or better processing speeds, don’t even bother. People with 3 Gigs of RAM are having memory problems.

    2. Sony on-line Tech support is virtually non-existent. I also got blocked from posting my problems to their troubleshooting page. I filled out all the required info, and then . . . zippo. That’s frustrating.

    3. My version of Vegas 9 wouldn’t recognize Architect 4. 5 even though it was installed on my machine. With Vegas 9’s Make Movie Wizard I kept getting “Architect wasn’t installed” messages. It was installed, but Vegas wouldn’t recognize it — even after two restarts. I then tried to install 5. 0 and at the very end of the install I was informed that my computer didn’t have the minimum requirements. My 5 hours of work are at this very moment locked up as a rendered-to-hard-drive Vegas Archive file.

    4. Other than Vegas 9, nothing will open my rendered Vegas file.

    5. Vegas 9 won’t process my audio files with my video files. In other words, I can’t drag and drop my files in their entirety to the Time-line. The video drags and drops, but it comes without the audio, which I know is there. Windows Media Player will play both video and audio of the raw uploaded SD file — but not Vegas. I have the mute buttons off. My envelopes are not locked. For some reason, Vegas 9a thinks my video files have no audio tracks. This didn’t happen with Vegas 8. Even with the same files.

    6. Don’t expect any tech support from Sony.

    Conclusions:

    a. I think it’s very nice Sony offers a trial version of their editing software, but not so nice that it doesn’t work very well.

    b. Even if it worked flawlessly I think it’s a process-heavy piece of editing software with way too much proprietary code.

    c. Sony has you by the you know what because their HD Handycams record HD in AVCHD format. This leaves you only a few editing options of which I am aware. Vegas Movie Studio is one. Pinnacle is one. The third is Nero Ultra. (I think you can also do it with Apple’s newest version of iMovie and Final Cut pro. ) Moreover, Vegas 9 seems to support the idea that Sony wants to make sure they have a lock on your project and your money.

    d. It would be nice if after you rendered a project with Vegas 9 that you would have a video in a format that was viewable and burnable by some other media and/or disc player.

Maybe Vegas 9 is OK. I’m obviously heavily biased against it. In fact, I’m ready to throw my HP out the window. A lot of people seem to think Vegas has a lot of features for medium-level video and audio editing. My experience is it’s way more trouble than it’s worth. If I were you, I’d seriously consider Pinnacle instead, or one of the older versions of Vegas.

I was very happy with this. It works great, the tutorials helped alot, and it was pretty cheap for what you get. The only thing that I’m not happy with is you don’t get the masking option with it, and you only get it with the Pro version. I found that out after I got the program, and was disapointed.
